Obama says “DOMA IS UNCONSTITUTIONAL” to Supreme Court!

These are truly amazing times we are witnessing right now! I never thought, in my lifetime, I would see such support for gay marriage/marriage equality! WOW!

Since his personal endorsement of gay marriage last spring, President
Barack Obama has kept up the public support, even making a historic mention of gay rights in his inaugural addresslast month.

Polls show that by weighing in, Obama and the White House are siding with the majority of Americans.

In the last decade — and especially in the last few years — Americans’ attitude toward gay marriage has shifted dramatically.

Right after the election in November, the Pew Research Center released a report on the
perception of gay marriage over the past decade. It found that opinion
has swung from staunch opposition in 2001 — 57 percent opposed gay
marriage, compared to 35 percent who were in favor — to solid support in
2012, when 48 percent polled supported gay marriage, compared to 43 percent who were opposed.

On Friday, President Obama’s administration filed an historic legal brief  that declares his belief to the US Supreme Court that DOMA is
unconstitutional.

NBC NEWS  SAID FRIDAY….The Obama administration urged the Supreme Court on
Friday to throw out a section of a 1996 federal law that prohibits
recognition of same-sex marriage.

The brief was filed Friday in United States v. Windsor, a
case challenging Section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act, or DOMA, the
law that legally declares marriage to be only between a man and a woman.
That section allows state and federal authorities to deny benefits to
same-sex couples that are commonplace for heterosexual couples, like
insurance for government workers and Social Security survivors’
benefits.

This marks the first time a president has endorsed same-sex marriage rights in the nation’s highest court.  In effect, the U.S. is asking the court to change DOMA to set a
higher bar for courts to approve laws that discriminate against gay men
and lesbians, Lyle Denniston, a Supreme Court expert, wrote on the influential ScotusBlog.

President
Barack Obama announced in 2011 that the U.S. would no longer enforce
DOMA, but “this is the first time the federal government has proposed
that constitutional test in a gay rights case before the Supreme Court,”
Denniston writes. “The court itself has never specified just what
constitutional standard it will apply in such cases, but it may have to
settle that this term.”

HOW AMAZING IS THAT?!

Brendon Ayanbadejo wants increased Super Bowl media to help support same-sex marriage

Gotta Love Bendon Ayanbadejo. How cool is he??

With
the national spotlight shining on the Super Bowl-bound Ravens this
week, linebacker Brendon Ayanbadejo is apparently hoping to divert some
attention off the gridiron.

According to New York Times columnist Frank Bruni,
just hours after Baltimore’s AFC championship win, Ayanbadejo directed
an e-mail to marriage equality advocates asking how he could utilize the
increased Super Bowl media to help support same-sex marriage.

It was almost 4 A.M. Monday morning Eastern time when he wrote the
email. He’d just arrived back home in the Baltimore area from the Boston
area, where the Ravens-Patriots contest had taken place. He was pumped
up, heart bursting with excitement over the Ravens’ good fortune,
thoughts racing about the two weeks leading up to the Bowl. And those
thoughts turned not just to a possible victory, but also to same-sex
marriage and his continued efforts to promote it.
WHAT?   What other football player would do this.  This is so huge, to have an outspoken straight ally, looking to use his spotlight, FOR US!

He tapped out an email to Brian Ellner, a leading marriage-equality
advocate with whom he had worked before, and Michael Skolnik, the
political director for Russell Simmons, a hip-hop mogul who has become
involved in many issues, including same-sex marriage.

Ayanbadejo wrote: “Is there anything I can do for marriage equality or
anti- bullying over the next couple of weeks to harness this Super Bowl
media?” The time stamp on the email was 3:40:35 A.M.

Ayanbadejo is one of two National Football League players whose
frequent public statements and gestures in support of same-sex marriage
drew widespread attention during this latest football season. The other
is the Minnesota Vikings punter Chris Kluwe.

The Times wrote a profile of each of them. The one on Ayanbadejo is here, and the one on Kluwe here. I also interviewed both players and quoted them in a blog post that accompanied a column last year on a former major league baseball team owner who was coming out of the closet.

2013 is going to be OUR YEAR! These are remarkable times we are witnessing!

Thank you, to all of our straight allies!

Gay Marriage Made Anti Gay Don Dwyer DRINK AND DRIVE

The gays are blamed for everything! Hurricanes, flooding, shootings…But this is a new one!

A Maryland lawmaker charged with operating a boat under the influence of
alcohol, and crashed,  says that he began drinking more after separating from his wife
and feeling “betrayed” by longtime colleagues who voted for gay
marriage.

From the Capital Gazette:

Dwyer
says he felt sold out when Dels. Tiffany Alston, Wade Kach and Bob
Costa voted for same-sex marriage, an issue he spent years crusading
against. Dwyer told reporters one day before the vote that he had enough
support to block the bill.

Kach, a Republican from Baltimore County, and Alston, a former Democrat
from Prince George’s County, voted against the bill in committee. But
Kach changed his vote after hearing testimony from gay couples. Alston
shifted her vote after her amendment was adopted.

Kach and Costa,
of Deale, were the only two House Republicans to vote for the bill. It
passed the House by two votes in February.

“I had no time to do anything,” Dwyer said. “Had I known earlier, I could have taken some action.”

“That betrayal really affected me,” he said. “I was physically ill. You
pour your heart into an issue like that and it’s devastating.”

Can Gay Porn Turn a Straight Man Pro Gay?

Can watching porn turn
straight men pro gay?

by Shaun Knittel
Best Gay News Magazine Staff Writer

Mark Regnerus, a sociology professor at the University of
Texas, made headlines for publishing a controversial study (which many found
flawed) that claimed children of gay parents were worse off than children of
straight parents, is back in the spotlight for a new bizarre claim: He says
that straight men who watch porn are more likely back same-sex marriage.

Regnerus summarized his study on the website for the
Witherspoon Institute, an organization that’s linked to the National
Organization for Marriage, by saying that porn “undermines the concept that in
the act of sexual intercourse, we share our body and whole self … permanently
and exclusively. On the contrary, it reinforces the idea that people can share
their bodies but not their inmost selves, and that they can do so temporarily
and (definitely) not exclusively without harm.”

According to the study, porn makes the viewer believe that
sex has nothing to do with marriage, and this leads to straight men accepting
gay marriage.
“Of the men who view pornographic material ’every day or
almost every day,’” Regnerus writes, “54 percent ’strongly agreed’
that gay and lesbian marriage should be legal, compared with around 13 percent
of those whose porn-use patterns were either monthly or less often than
that.”

The Texas professor, however, does not discuss how porn
impacts women. In fact, he claims that “women typically aren’t as into
porn as men are, and yet women in general tend to support same-sex marriage
more readily than do men. A recent Gallup poll noted that 56 percent of women
favor it, while only 42 percent of men do. No, this theory is not about
women.”

Earlier this year, social scientists and scholars slammed
Regnerus’ anti-gay parenting study, in which he said that children of same-sex
parents were worse off than children from straight parents.

Reaction to his work was so ill-received that some claimed
that he violated ethical standards when researching the study, called “New
Family Structures Study,” and officials from the University of Texas,
where Regnerus teaches, launched an investigation. The result concluded the
professor did not violate ethical standards nor break any rules.

The study surveyed about 3,000 18 to 39 year olds who were
mostly raised by straight parents: 175 individuals said they had mothers who
once had a same-sex relationship and 73 said their fathers were involved with
someone of the same sex. The results claim that children from these parents are
more likely to end up on welfare, be unemployed, and attend therapy as adults
when compared to children from straight couples.

The initial study outraged LGBT rights organizations such as
GLAAD, the Human Rights Campaign and Family Equality Council, calling the paper
flawed, misleading, and scientifically unsound.

In November, the professor admitted that his controversial
study was flawed but still supported his findings. He told Focus on the
Family’s Citizen Magazine that he would be more careful about the language he
used in his findings in the future.

“I said ’lesbian mothers’ and ’gay fathers,’ when in
fact, I don’t know about their sexual orientation; I do know about their
same-sex relationship behavior.” he said. “But as far as the findings
themselves, I stand behind them.”

2012 Was an Amazing Big Gay News Year

I was born in 1960.

There. I said it.
I am 52!
I am not sure how old YOU are, our readers.  But I remember a time, BEFORE the internet. When gay men had to sneak around in bookstores trying to meet up. Or place ads in local magazine classifieds, to make a date. Then came phone sex. and phone personals. Times have changed kids!

I don’t remember Stonewall, I was only 9, but  I certainly know my LGBT history and know what  it meant. One night in 1969. WOW. And look where we are today. I did not think I would EVER see gay marriage in my lifetime. But look how many states have embraced us!!
OUR president supports marriage equality! that is SO BIG!
ABC News and the Washington Post showed in May that 53% of Americans believe gay marriage should be legal, with 39% of those people saying they feel “strongly” about that endorsement.
Another survey found that a steady majority of Americans — 54-56% —  reject the once dominant notion that homosexuality is “morally unacceptable,” up about 18 points since 2002.
FOUR STATES – voted against hate in November 2012. Over 50% of  Minnesotans voted against Amendment 1, a constitutional definition of marriage as “one man, one woman”.

Washington  gave the green light to gay nuptials, the first time in American history marriage equality has been approved by popular vote, forever changing the face of marriage in this country. NINE STATES now have Marriage Equality – and Illinois plans to be 10th!
Corporate America stood up FOR US! Microsoft;  Bill and Melinda Gates donated a total of $600,000 to the successful marriage equality fight in Washington, while  Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and his wife gave almost five times that: $2.5 million. Is that amazing, or what??? These are truly amazing times we are witnessing. + Already an outspoken advocate for equality, actor  Brad Pitt stepped it up by again donating $100,000 to same-sex marriage fights in four states, even as his mother argued against equality.

LEGALIZE LOVE with Google.
Always at the forefront of progressive battles,   their employees recorded a pro-marriage equality video earlier this year. Then  tech giant Google took its show of support on the road by  launching an international “Legalize Love” campaign in Poland and Singapore with sights on expanding into all the countries where it has offices. “We want our employees who are gay or lesbian or transgender to have the same experience outside the office as they do in the office,” said Google diversity chief Mark Palmer-Edgecumbe at the company’s LGBT summit in London this summer.

Pop Music Gay Love – Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, are blowing up after coming out and fighting for equality: the vocally pro-marriage artists’ track “Same Love” became a gay marriage anthem months before their appearance with on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.

Oreo celebrated its 100th birthday as one of the most recognizable and beloved treats in the nation. It also celebrated gay pride by posting a picture of a rainbow-filled cookie with the caption “proudly support love,” a quiet show of solidarity that hastily went viral on social media platforms.

Expedia and AmTrak courted gay travelers;  The Gap took a stand for marriage equality with their  clever “Be One” campaign.  J. Crew continued to feature same-sex couples in its catalogue.  Chevy and  Lexus both showed their pride, and  Red Hook Beer toasted its local marriage equality law in Washington State. Incredible stuff we are witnessing!

But one of the biggest shows of love for LGBT communities came from the 110-year old department store chain. JC Penney. WHO KNEW, Pennys would support LGBT people?!

One Million Moms, a numerically misleading conservative group of maybe a few thousand, boycotted the retailer after it hired out entertainer Ellen DeGeneres as its spokesperson.

DeGeneres naturally spoke about it on her show, but JC Penney itself wanted to make clear where it stood. “We stand squarely behind Ellen as our spokesperson and that’s a great thing,” CEO Ron Johnson told CBS News. “She shares the same values that we do in our company. Our company was founded 110 years ago on the golden rule, which is about treating people fair and square, just like you would like to be treated yourself. And we think Ellen represents the values of our company and the values that we share.” After a few other flair ups about Ellen, OMM finally called it quits. “We’re moving on,” they said. – OMM actually have had a very sad year. They have lost steam. Same as American Family Association (AFA). They used to call for boycotts, now no one really pays attention to them!  HA!

Speaking of bad years!  The century-old  Boy Scouts of America has little time to make a decision: apologize for and reverse discriminatory policies or find themselves passe.
For decades the Boy Scouts of America’s policy prohibiting gay or lesbian leaders has been a stubborn and seemingly permanent piece of traditional discrimination. This year, cracks began to show and the organization is finally finding itself on the defensive, from both within and outside its own ranks. They seem to be a sinking ship!

They have been shamed  by Zach Wahls and other pro-equality scouts, were again publicly humiliated when celebrities and politicians alike,  rallied around Ryan Andresen, an 18-year old Scout denied Eagle status, the BSA was  criticized by the White House and has lost local chapters as well as funding from  high-profile backers Intel, the  Merck Foundation and  UPS.

And more shame – Two other  “institutions”  from very different genres, fast food chain  Chick-fil-A and  the Salvation Army, are also feeling the heat of our more inclusive culture. Chick-fil-A was “exposed” for donating millions of dollars to anti-gay causes. Much like Cracker Barrell in the 80’s, straight and gay people now boycott the chicken chain.

The Salvation Army has taken heat for a number of years now,  and  finding itself increasingly criticized for its anti-gay sentiment:  the UC Berkeley student government recently demanded the school give the charity the boot, and  Current TV’s Stephanie Miller issued an apology after giving allowing a Salvation Army official to misrepresent his organization’s views on air.

And I salute the straight allies who supported this year. How cool was that?! Brendon-Ayanbadejo. Gotta love that guy.  Since 2009, Ayanbedejo has advocated for legalizing same-sex marriage. His advocacy rather suddenly became a cause célèbre in September 2012, after Maryland State Delegate Emmett C. Burns, Jr. wrote an August 29, 2012 letter to Baltimore Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti, on official Maryland State letterhead, demanding that Bisciotti “take the necessary action … to inhibit such expressions from your employee.” Burns’ letter went on to state that, “I know of no other NFL player who has done what Mr. Ayanbadejo is doing.” Burns’ letter was widely criticized, not least because of its obvious disregard for Ayanbadejo’s right to free speech. According to The Washington Post, the Ravens acknowledged receiving the letter but had no further comment.

Shortly after the Burns letter was delivered, Ayanbedejo publicly announced that he had no intention of remaining silent on an issue of conscience and public importance. Ayanbadejo has since said that he has received widespread support in the world of football.

Among others, Minnesota Vikings punter Chris Kluwe wrote a scathing response to Burns, while the Ravens also publicly sided with Ayanbadejo.

Minnesota Vikings football player Chris Kluwe  charted his own course, becoming an instant legend, when he wrote a letter to anti-gay Maryland lawmaker Emmett C. Burns that equality “won’t magically turn you into a lustful cockmonster” after Burns criticized fellow football player Brendon Ayanbadejo of the Baltimore Ravens for supporting love. Kluwe reiterated that “lustful cockmonster” message in an ad for Minnesotans for Equality.  GQ magazine named both men “honorary gays of the year,” which in and of itself speaks volumes about the men’s magazine’s evolution.

And then there was  Zach Wahls. Wahls technically hit the scene in 2011, when the then-19-year old made an impassioned speech defending his two moms before the Iowa State House, but 2012 was the year Wahls grew into his own, regularly appearing on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and David Letterman’s Late Night, campaigning for President Obama’s reelection effort, speaking before the Democratic National Committee.

What a year, right?  It’s like a huge wave and it’s going to hit shore soon. And I believe WE WILL SEE our EQUAL RIGHTS, very soon. It’s a great time to be gay. But remember, there will always be haters. So be safe. I don’t care where you live. Remember we have haters.

Seattle Begins to Issue Marriage Licenses

Seattle Issues First Same Sex Marriages Licenses After Nov.
Election

by Shaun Knittel

Big Gay News Magazine Staff Writer

On December 5, Governor Chris Gregoire (D-WA) and Secretary
of State Sam Reed certified Referendum 74, the marriage equality bill that
makes same-sex marriage legal in the state .

“This is a very important and historic day in the great
state of Washington. For many years now, we’ve said, ‘One more step. One more
step.’ This is our last step,” Gregoire said. “To the couples that
are here today that will finally be treated with the equality they’ve deserved
for many years, congratulations to each of you.”

On midnight, December 6, King County Executive Dow
Constantine signed the first same-sex marriage license in Washington State for
Jane Abbott Lighty and Pete-e Petersen at the King County Recorder’s Office in
Seattle, Washington. The office opened at 12:01 a.m. to begin issuing marriage
licenses to same-sex couples for the first time after Washington voters chose
to legalize same-sex marriage in November’s election…

Dozens of gay and lesbian couples attained their marriage
licenses.  King County, the state’s
biggest county, opened the doors to its auditor’s office shortly after
midnight.

King County Executive Dow Constantine said, “People who have
been waiting all these years to have their rights recognized should not have to
wait one minute longer.”

In Seattle, the mood was festive.

Volunteers distributed everything from roses and coffee to
fruit. Champagne was poured. Different groups of men and women serenaded the
waiting line, one to the tune of “Going to the Chapel.”

According to the Associated Press, “Hundreds of people,”
(many of whom had waited all night and had lined up hours earlier” shaik
snaking around the downtown Seattle building on a chilly December night.

“We knew it was going to happen, but it’s still
surreal,” said Amanda Dollente, who along with her partner, Kelly
Middleton, began standing in line at 4 p.m. Wednesday.

Among those getting marriage licenses was Dan Savage, who
said, “It’s been a long fight but it ain’t over. We still have to fight (the
Defense of Marriage Act) and there’s 41 other states were same-sex couples
aren’t allowed to marry.”

Savage plans to marry his partner on Sunday in a ceremony at
City Hall.

Washington has a three-day waiting period, so the first
same-sex marriages can’t be performed in the state until Sunday. Several
members of the clergy have volunteered to perform marriages at three locations,
on Sunday. They are also planning to perform weddings later in the week,
particularly on Wednesday, which carries the notable date of 12-12-12

Washington will be the seventh state to recognize same-sex
marriages. Maine will follow on Dec. 29 and Maryland on Jan. 1 as the result of
votes in those states on similar ballot measures. The other six states (by
order of adoption) are Massachusetts, Connecticut, Iowa, Vermont, New Hampshire
and New York. Washington, D.C. also allows gays and lesbians to marry.

Michigan Teacher suspended for allowing Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’ pro-marriage equality song “Same Love.”

South Lyon’s Centennial Middle School in Michigan suspended performing arts teacher Susan Johnson for letting a student play Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’ pro-marriage equality song “Same Love.”

Even though the song is about celebrating everyone, the school sided with an offended student and told Johnson to take three-days off, two of which were without pay.
“I was paralyzed. I really didn’t understand why I was being suspended,” she told the local Fox News affiliate. “I’m very disappointed in the bias, the bigotry that I feel that they’re really hiding behind.”
“I really love my kids and I never want to hurt them, but I also know that there’s a lot of bullying and there’s a lot of gay bashing and racial issues going on in our country and I want the kids to feel comfortable in my class no matter who they are,” said the teacher, who has contacted the ACLU about the matter.
The school wouldn’t comment on the situation, saying, “We don’t go on camera here in South Lyon.”

Obama Endorses Same-Sex Marriage Initiatives in 3 States

Obama Officially Endorses Same-Sex Marriage Initiatives in
Three States

by Shaun Knittel
Best Gay News Magazine Staff Writer

On October 25, President Barack Obama officially endorsed
state ballot initiatives to legalize same-sex marriage in Washington state,
Maryland and Maine.

Statements issued by the Obama campaign in those three
states urging voters to approve the marriage equality measures on their
respective November 6 ballots came five months after Obama became the first
U.S. president to express support for the right of same-sex couples to wed.

“While the president does not weigh in on every single
ballot measure in every state, the president believes in treating everyone
fairly and equally, with dignity and respect,” according to a statement in
Seattle by Paul Bell, press secretary for Obama’s campaign in Washington and
Oregon. “Washington’s same-sex marriage law would treat all Washington couples
equally, and that is why the President supports a vote to approve Referendum
74.”

Nearly identical endorsement statements were issued in
support of similar initiatives on the November 6 ballot in Maine and Maryland.

Six states and the District of Columbia have already
extended marriage rights to gay and lesbian couples, all brought about by court
rulings and legislative action.

Obama previously spoke out against a Minnesota measure that
would pass a constitutional amendment defining marriage as exclusively a union
between a man and a woman.

Knights of Columbus Are Anti Gay Marriage

The Knights of Columbus, a wealthy and influential Catholic charitable organization, is a leading funder in the push to make same-sex marriage illegal in four states that have ballot measures on the issue this fall, a coalition of gay rights groups announced Thursday (Oct. 18).
The Knights have contributed millions of dollars directly to several of the campaigns to stop the legalization of gay marriage and have channeled money through other Catholic groups. They also have provided extensive financial support to the National Organization for Marriage, according to the Human Rights Campaign, one of four advocacy groups that compiled the research.
“This report mentions $6.2 million donated by the Knights over the past
seven years, during which time we also donated more than $1 billion to
charitable causes, with more than $225 million of that coming from our
Supreme Office.”

Legalize LOVE – Legalize LOVEBUG to Support President Obama

Worried
that recent tight polling numbers might lead to four more states
rejecting equal marriage or adopting a constitutional ban, gay activist
couple Luke Montgomery and Eduardo Cisneros are hoping that highlighting
President Obama’s support for equal marriage will sway voters in these
traditionally blue states.

To create an attention-getting and dramatic
campaign image, the duo have covered every inch of their 2010 VW Beetle
in over 1,000 “Legalize Love” Obama bumper stickers with the “O” in
“love” being replaced by the framiliar Obama logo (video & photos at
LegalizeLoveBug.com
). They set out on a 2,400 mile cross-country journey from their L.A.
home to campaign on the ground in Maryland, Maine, Minnesota and
Washington ahead of the November 6 votes. While in each state the
activists will be clad in blue “Legalize Love” T-shirts and registering
voters, passing out free “Legalize Love” bumper stickers, wristbands and
T-shirts and holding press conferences geared at drawing print, radio
and TV coverage to the President’s pro-equal marriage position.

WATCH  THE VIDEO

“These
are blue states that are voting for Obama and the ‘Legalize Love Bug’
will help make sure that the President’s support for equal marriage is
heard loud and clear so they also vote for equality.” said Eduardo
Cisneros. “Because of a tight national race, the President might not be
able to hammer home his support for gay marriage so we are stepping in
to make sure that message gets out no matter what.”

“Obama
has been a game-changer on this issue and we’re campaigning our hearts
out because we believe that the President is the secret weapon to move
and inspire voters,” adds Luke Montgomery. “We want to get people
involved with the campaign at LegalizeLoveBug.com so they can be a part of making marriage equality history in this election.”

Activists are also rallying support for the cause Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr and via an online campaign video on the LegalizeLoveBug.com
website. T-shirts reading “Legalize Love” are being offered on the site
starting at $9.99, along with bumper stickers and wristbands. The
campaign store also has wristbands, tank tops, buttons and hoodies to
help get the word out and show support for this grassroots movement.

During
the trans-red state journey in a car that might serve as a lightning
rod for homophobia, the couple has been harassed, threatened and called
“faggots” but also has been treated to hundreds of honks and “thumbs-up”
gestures of support. The enthusiastic reaction from people who see the
“Legalize Love Bug” in person is documented in their online campaign video attempting to get one million Facebook “Likes” to say “thumbs up” to Obama for supporting marriage equality.

Luke
Montgomery adds, “For us this isn’t politics, it’s personal. We want
the right to get married like anybody else. We hope people join us the
journey and follow along at LegalizeLoveBug.com.”

Rupert Everett REALLY HATES Marriage and Gay Marriage

Rupert Everett was in the news, again. Last week, Rupert made some comments about gay families, this week, he continues telling us his true feelings!

ON MARRIAGE, Rupert says,

“Why do queens want to go and get married
in churches? Obviously this crusty old pathetic, Anglican church – the
most joke-ish church of all jokey churches – of course they don’t want
to have queens getting married. It’s kind of understandable that they
don’t; they’re crusty old calcified freaks. But why do we want to get
married in churches? I don’t understand that, myself, personally.

I
loathe heterosexual weddings; I would never go to a wedding in my life. I
loathe the flowers, I loathe the fucking wedding dress, the little
bridal tiara. It’s grotesque. It’s just hideous. The wedding cake, the
party, the champagne, the inevitable divorce two years later. It’s just a
waste of time in the heterosexual world, and in the homosexual world I
find it personally beyond tragic that we want to ape this institution
that is so clearly a disaster.”  WOW!

And he adds, ““For me, being gay was
about wanting to do the opposite of the straight world, so I think
that’s where my problems in this particular area come from. For me,
personally, the last thing I would like in the entire world would be to
go through cocktailing my sperm with my boyfriend and finding some grim
couple in Ohio who are gluten-free and who you pay $75,000 to have your
baby.

To me it feels absolutely hideous. But that’s me, just me. I’m not
having a go at gay couples who do. I think if Elton and David want to
have babies, that’s wonderful. I think we should all do what we want.
Isn’t there a middle way, where you can just say, ‘Not for me, but it
doesn’t matter’? But no, everything’s sort of turned into al-Qaida. I’m
sure I’m going to be nail-bombed. David Furnish is probably going to
send Patrick Cox with a bomb and blow up the theatre.”

Gay Couple Says Group Used Their Engagement Photo in Anti-Gay Attack

Gay Couple Says Group Used Their Engagement Photo in

Anti-Gay Attack Mailers

By Shaun Knittel
Best Gay News Magazine Staff Writer

A New Jersey couple is suing a group that used their
engagement photo in two anti-gay campaign fliers in Colorado.

Southern Poverty Law Center will file suit against the
Virginia-based Public Advocates of the United States, on behalf of Brian Edwards
and Tom Privitere. The firm altered the couple’s engagement photo to attack
pro-gay Republican candidates, Sen. Jean White and Jeffrey Hare during primary
elections. White had voted for a bill in support of civil unions and Hare was
running for an open House seat in Weld County.

Originally pictured kissing before the Manhattan skyline,
White’s attack ad placed Edwards and Privetere against a snowy backdrop with
the words, “State Senator Jean White’s Idea of ‘Family Values?,’” while Hare’s
featured clouds and posed the question, “Jeffrey Hare’s Vision for Weld
County?”

They both lost their primaries.

According to news reports, when the ads initially appeared,
The Denver Post asked Public Advocate’s president, Eugene Delgaudio, why they
used the photo and if they were worried about copyright infringement.

“We are a non-profit and make no money from any photos,
postings, references, parodies, street theater or educational materials,”
Delgaudio responded via email. “Other groups make fair use of our materials or
2000 photos from our website under these broad principles of political
education and we acknowledge a limited use of many of our own materials, by
other groups, under parody, some fairly strong critical attacks from our political
opposition on our efforts as part of a robust debate.”

 “I can’t help but
feel the need to warn other LGBT couples that hey, even after you overcome your
fears of coming out to your families and friends and coworkers; even after you
graduate and leave that hellhole of a high school, where every single day you
feared for your life; even after all the letters to your senators and the
countless marches that eventually won you and your state the marriage equality
you deserve; even after you find your soul mate, get engaged and then married…
someone, a stranger, will seek out your image on the internet, perhaps on a
site like this one which was created to document our journey down the aisle
with the hopes that our experiences would benefit other LGBT couples… steal it
and use it in an attempt to destroy others who support you,” Edwards said on
his blog.

The Southern Poverty Law Center earlier placed Public
Advocate of the United States on its list of anti-gay hate groups. It cited
several reasons, including noting it provoked readers in a fundraising letter
to “imagine a world where the police allow homosexual adults to rape young boys
in the streets.”

Lady Gaga Slams Pope Benedict as France Prepares to Legalize Gay Marriage

Lady Gaga disses the Pope

 By Shaun Knittel
Best Gay News Magazine Staff Writer
During a September 23 live interview with the French Radio station Europe 1, Lady Gaga slammed the recent comments by Pope Benedict XVI who said that gay marriage is a threat to the family and society.
“I think that gay marriage is something that is going to happen, it must. We are not truly equal part of humanity if we not allowed to freely love one another,” said Lady Gaga, who performed her Born This Way Ball concert at Paris’s Stade de France, September 22.
“What the Pope thinks of being gay does not matter, it doesn’t matter to the world,” continued Gaga, who is known for her support of the LGBT community. “It matters to those who like the Pope and follow him. It’s not a reflection of all Christians, it is not a reflection of all religious people, it’s a point of view of one person.”
“Vive la France, vive la liberation” she said in French.
According to a recent poll, 65% of French people support giving gay and lesbian couples the right to marry.
Gay Star News reports that Lady Gaga’s final remarks are believed to also reflect the criticism of French LGBT rights advocates who stated that lack of fertility assistance in the proposed same-sex marriage bill of France, falls short of full equality.
“And to all the gay people here [in France]. May you can live and love each other until the end of time. And I hope you will have the human right to breed in an entirely equal manner,” she said.
On September 21, Pope Benedict XVI on Friday called on Roman Catholics in France to “defend marriage.”
According to On Top Magazine, the Socialist government of President Francois Hollande is preparing to introduce legislation which would legalize gay marriage in the nation. Socialists recently won control of parliament, making passage of the legislation highly likely.
Benedict said he believes such unions harm society.
“The family is threatened by a conception of human nature that is proven to be defective,” Benedict told a group of French bishops visiting Castel Gandolfo, the pope’s summer residence located on the outskirts of Rome. “Marriage and the family are institutions that must be promoted and defended from every possible misrepresentation of their true nature, since whatever is harmful to them will in fact be injurious to society itself.”
Benedict has previously opposed marriage equality in other parts of the world, including predominantly Catholic Spain and Argentina.
The government is expected to unveil its bill to the French cabinet on October 31

Chick-fil-A HAS NOT changed their Anti Gay Donation Policy

How did this happen??

We got a press release a few days ago from The Civil Rights Agenda, out of Chicago. They claimed they got Chick-fil-A  to change their company policy about making donations to anti-gay groups.

Chick-fil-A CEO Dan Cathy told Mike Huckabee that contrary to reports announced this week
by Chicago LGBT rights group The Civil Rights Agenda and Chicago
alderman Joe Moreno, Chick-fil-A has NOT agreed to end its anti-gay
donations.

Mike Huckabee writes on his website:

I talked earlier today personally with
Dan Cathy, CEO of Chick Fil-A about the new reports that Chick Fil-A had
capitulated to demands of the supporters of same sex marriage. This is
not true.
The company continues to focus on the fair treatment of all of
its customers and employees, but to end confusion gave me this
statement:

“There continues to be erroneous implications in the
media that Chick-fil-A changed our practices and priorities in order to
obtain permission for a new restaurant in Chicago. That is incorrect.
Chick-fil-A made no such concessions, and we remain true to who we are
and who we have been.

In part, the press release from CRA  states: September 18, 2012 – Chicago, Illinois – The Civil Rights Agenda (TCRA),
Illinois’ leading lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) civil
rights advocacy organization, has learned that Alderman Moreno has
finalized his negotiations with Chick-Fil-A.  Alderman Moreno has
confirmed that Chick-fil-A will no longer give money to anti-gay
organizations and that they have clarified in an internal document that
the company will treat every person equally, regardless of sexual
orientation.
The Civil Rights Agenda worked closely with the Alderman in
an advisory role as he negotiated these concessions with the executives
at Chick-fil-A.  Additionally, members of TCRA spoke directly with
executives at Chick-fil-A during negotiations to aid in educating their
decision makers about anti-discrimination policies and issues affecting
the LGBT community.

We have called both Alderman Moreno AND the Civil Rights Agenda –

Anthony Martinez from TCRA said,  We
would like clarification from Mr. Cathy and Alderman Moreno on this
matter. Chick-fil-A either lied or they are being very stealth about how
they characterize this matter with their base.

Rupert Everett is Against Gay Families

I used to really like Rupert Everett…before his facelift. Since his facelift, perhaps they pulled his skin too tight? I think it is affecting his brain.  He  says the dumbest things and now, has turned me against him. His a bitter queen who really should keep his internal homophobic remarks to himself.

You may remember, a few years back he told aspiring actors to STAY IN THE CLOSET.

Rupert Everett has been openly gay since he came out 20 years ago, but he doesn’t recommend that route for other actors.

“It’s not that advisable to be honest. It’s not very easy,” he told UK’s Guardian. “And, honestly, I would not advise any actor necessarily, if he was really thinking of his career, to come out.”

NOW the actor  has come under fire after he made a shocking attack on gay fathers.

The
53-year-old gay actor – who played a gay father opposite Madonna in
2000 film The Next Best Thing – has given a controversial interview to
the Sunday Times Magazine, sparking a backlash from gay rights
campaigners.

Rupert said: “I can’t think of anything worse than
being brought up by two gay dads. Some people might not agree with that.
Fine! That’s just my opinion.”

“I’m not speaking on behalf of the gay community. In fact, I don’t
feel like I’m part of any ‘community’. The only community I belong to is
humanity and we’ve got too many children on the planet, so it’s good
not to have more.”

Ben Summerskill, chief executive of the gay
rights group Stonewall, said: “Rupert should get out a little bit more
to see the facts for himself.

“There is absolutely no evidence
that the kids of gay parents suffer in the way they are being brought up
or in how they develop.”

BrideGroom Will be a Movie by Linda Bloodworth Thomason

We blogged about this young man  several months ago. Then Linda Bloodwoth Thomason heard his story and wanted to make a movie to share it with the world, as a wake up call. A Kickstarter campaign  was started trying to raise $300,000. They raised  $380,000!  So the movie WILL BE MADE!!

BRIDEGROOM, will tell the emotional journey of Shane Bitney Crone and Tom Bridegroom, two young men in a loving and committed relationship – a relationship that was cut tragically short by a misstep off the side of a roof.  The story of what happened after this accidental death– of how people without the legal protections of marriage can find themselves completely shut out and ostracized– is poignant, enraging and opens a window onto the issue of marriage equality like no speech or lecture ever will.

The YouTube video was shared widely on social media sites and posted by
prominent celebrities, including: Neil Patrick Harris, Sara Gilbert,
Fran Dresher, Denise Richards and Piers Morgan. The video also grabbed
the attention of Designing Women creator and Man from Hope
director, Linda Bloodworth Thomason, who contacted Shane to bring his
and Tom’s story to the large screen. Shane and Tom’s story resonated
strongly with Bloodworth Thomason. “The prejudice and bigotry that Shane
and Tom experienced was not unlike what I witnessed in 1986 when my
mother died of transfused AIDS,” she said. To date the video has more
than 3,000,000 views.

PLEASE  SHARE THE VIDEO.

Gay CinderFella with Idol’s Todrick Hall

It’s Time! Legalize Love!
is the theme for this summer!

Following the viral success of “Beauty and the Beat,” Todrick Hall — self-proclaimed
“Broadway performer, ‘American Idol’ finalist, Singer, Dancer,
‘Glee’-wannabe and YouTuber” — has just released another musical Disney
Parody, “CinderFella.”

Hall brings “Cinderella” up to date, mixing iconic Disney tunes with
pop songs like Katy Perry’s “Firework” and Chris Brown’s “Turn Up The
Music,” and features celebrities, such as Janice Dickinson, Shangela and
Willam from “Rupaul’s Drag Race,” Lance Bass and Daniel Franzese, in
classic fairy tale roles.

Best of all, the pro-gay music video breaks the unshakably straight
Disney tradition: Jasmine hits the dance floor with Alice, and Prince
Charming has a happily-ever-after with CinderFella. As Hall writes,
“This story speaks volumes and I think that love is as classic as this
fairy tale. It’s time for us to legalize love in all shapes and colors.”

Lots of stars make cameos!  Janice Dickinson, Willam Belli,  Shangela, Glozell, Kimberly Cole, uber sexy  Steven Dehler, Sam Garfield, Tyler Brockington, sexy Aubrey O’Day,  and Lance Bass as Prince charming!!

Todrick says, “I wanted to tell this famous fairy tale in a new and innovative way, combining familiar top 40’s songs with classic Disney melodies. This story speaks volumes and I think that love is as classic as this fairy tale. It’s time for us to legalize love in all shapes and colors.
Please support this movement by posting this on your social media sites. “

Straights Only Stickers by Artist Castroburger

Towleroad ran this – and I wanted to share it, to help spread the word:

Castroburger is  a street artist and Towleroad reader:

A while back he created  GODS  HATES  FACTS campaign, now he has started a new sticker campaign, Straights Only.

“It is a play on the Whites Only signs of segregated America. The campaign has spread over the past months to Mexico, Latin America, Texas, North Carolina, Arizona, England, and Scotland and we hope this is just the beginning.

After my boyfriend had to go back to the UK this past February (thanks to DOMA), I needed to vent my frustration and came up with Straights Only after reading a story about a Whites Only sign put up at a public pool in Ohio in 2011.

My intent is to shock the viewer before they read the small print and discover this is about the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), which was set up in 1996 to protect traditional marriage. So far this year DOMA has kept my boyfriend 5500 miles away for 4 months and forced us to spend our 5th anniversary apart. And we’re not alone in this situation (I’m sure you are aware). There are tens of thousands of other same-sex couples facing considerable time apart each year.

We hope to start making an impact not just in the big cities with Straights Only, but in communities like I grew up in, Denton, Texas.

A bigcartel store has been created
for anyone who’d like to get involved.  All proceeds fund my boyfriend’s Visa fees. People can also check out our Facebook page.

New Poll Shows More Americans “strongly support” Same-Sex Marriage

Religious Embrace
Helping Fuel Support
    for Gay Marriage, Expert
Says

Landmark Poll Finds
More Strong Support
                                                           Than Strong Opposition

For the first time, a new poll shows more Americans
“strongly support” same-sex marriage than “strongly oppose” it, a finding that
could be attributed to changes occurring within organized religions, says a
Presbyterian elder and lay preacher.

“For 2,000 years, religion has been the genesis of antipathy
toward homosexuals, but now, three major American denominations have approved
ordination of openly gay clergy,” says Paul Hartman, a retired PBS/NPR station
executive and author of The Kairos (
www.CarpeKairos.com), a novel that
imagines Jesus as gay.

“Gay has become the civil rights issue of the 21st century,”
he says.

The May survey of more than 1,000 adults found a dramatic
reversal from earlier surveys: more adults now “strongly support” same-sex
marriage rights (39 percent) than “strongly oppose” them (32 percent).
Over all, Langer Research Associates says, 53 percent of Americans believe
same-sex marriages should be legalized – up from only 36 percent just six years
ago.

“Episcopalian, Lutheran and Presbyterian denominations have
overturned centuries of tradition in welcoming openly gay clergy,” Hartman says.
“There’s a growing realization that religion can and should help lead us all
toward a more mature understanding and acceptance of minority sexual
orientations.”

In 2012, he says, there is a new human rights landscape in
the United States. He cites these additional recent developments:

• The U.S. military joined 43 other
countries when it repealed “Don’t ask, don’t tell” and allowed openly-gay
service members.

• Same-sex marriages are now legal
in six states and the District of Columbia. Three other states — Washington,
Maryland and California — have same-sex marriage under active consideration.
Eleven more offer “civil union”-type status for same-sex couples.

• A federal appeals court in Boston
recently struck down the Defense of Marriage Act (which defines marriage as
“one man, one woman”), making consideration by the U.S. Supreme Court almost
certain.

• Dr. Robert Spitzer, one of the
last nationally-respected scholars whose studies lent credence to “gay
reparative” therapies, recently offered a retraction and apology to the gay
community.

“Unfortunately, the occasionally hateful crowd still
resonates with a very small group of people, including those headed by preacher
Fred Phelps and congregants, who continue to make news as they picket the
funerals of soldiers and celebrities,” Hartman says.

Western cultures’ condemnation of same-sex love appears to
have originated from Judeo-Christian scriptures, but contemporary biblical
scholarship amends old interpretations, he says.

“That’s why I wanted to tell a religion-based suspense story
about homophobia,” Hartman says. “It addresses fear of all kinds, because in
passage after biblical passage, scripture tells humans who are facing change,
sickness, alienation, death, and everything else: ‘fear not.’  It applies
to homophobia, as well.”

About Paul
Hartman

Paul Hartman is a retired PBS/NPR station executive with a
passion for biblical history. He is a Presbyterian elder, a lay preacher and a
Dead Sea Scrolls aficionado. Hartman, a father and grandfather, confesses he is
a lifelong fear-fighter.
