Healthy Choice for Fast Food…Will Taco Bell Offer Vegan?

It was about 1998, I decided to start working out and started making better food choices. But at that time, it was hard to find anything healthy at fast food joints.
I think around 2000, some places started offering grilled chicken sandwiches an option. And in the years that followed, more and more healthy choices were added to many menus. Now you can even get fresh apple slices and yogurt for desert!
The next evolution is really vegan choices. The more I learn about how animals are treated for our consumption, it’s disgusting. DID YOU KNOW? Over 99% of cruelty to animals in the United States occurs at the hands of the meat, dairy, and egg industries – which confine, mutilate, and slaughter over 9 billion animals each year.

Soloflex Fitness Changed America…Model Scott Madsen in Jail
and the launch of a fitness craze,
started in the 80’s…. SOLOFLEX.
The ad made home fitness seem easy, and it made Soloflex a hit. In his book The Soloflex Story, An American Parable, Jerry Wilson writes that the company went from losing money in 1986 to clearing $54 million in pre-tax profits in 1988; since then, he told me, the company has spent $175 million on cable television buys and sold about $1 billion worth of equipment.
Of course, most of those machines ended up as expensive towel racks: “The vast majority of people who bought them didn’t continue to use them,” Wilson told me. Even so, people kept ordering the machines, fueled by late-night dreams that they could have a body like the company’s shirtless, chest-hairless spokesmodel Scott Madsen.
Pretty Boy Madsen, a gymnast who was called “genetically perfect” in the Washington Post, eventually released a book of action photographs called the The Scott Madsen Poster Book . After nearly 20 years the Scott Madsen Poster Book is still one of the best erotic photgraphy book ever published.
Madsen, who was straight, did not care for the attention of all of his male fans.
“I’ve been chased around the room by faggots.

The 49-ish year old hottie-has-been was living in Vancouver, Washington. In March 2010, Madsen was sentenced to 2 years in a Federal prison for stealing from his former employer. Back to Soloflex, Madsen helped the company STRIKE RICH! After a couple years of struggling with sales, Wilson hired Madsen to ne his poster boy. SALES FLEW THROUGH THE ROOF. Wilson became a rich man.
A host of imitators soon appeared, parroting Soloflex’s marketing and iconography. “It is a bit grating when people say to me, ‘Hey, you’re the Bowflex guy, aren’t you?’ ” he writes. Wilson made a pastime of suing these companies, and the lawsuits made him still richer. (Bowflex settled with Wilson for $8 million; NordicTrack settled for $18.5 million and soon thereafter filed for bankruptcy.)
Soloflex was once $495 – and is now $1250 these days. In recent years, Soloflex has been eclipsed in popularity by other, more au courant devices that loudly tout their new fitness innovations and bargain-basement prices. Wilson wrote that he could’ve moved production of the Soloflex to China, allowing him to build a cheaper exercise machine to compete with his lower-cost rivals. The Soloflex inventor explained, however, that he would “rather quit business than ship jobs offshore.”
The result, he wrote: “Soloflex is still here, albeit much smaller. That’s fine with me.”

So he walks in. And there were several friends of mine that knew what he was wearing that smiled and waved and gave him high-fives. We walk down the hall to where his classroom is.
And that’s where things went wrong. Two mothers went wide-eyed and made faces as if they smelled decomp. And I realize that my son is seeing the same thing I am. So I say, “Doesn’t he look great?”
Mom A says in disgust, “Did he ask to be that?!” I say that he sure did as Halloween is the time of year that you can be whatever it is that you want to be. They continue with their nosy, probing questions as to how that was an option and didn’t I try to talk him out of it. Mom B mostly just stood there in shock and dismay.
She goes on to tell the moms..”But here’s the point, it is none of your damn business!
If you think that me allowing my son to be a female character for Halloween is somehow going to ‘make’ him gay then you are an idiot. Firstly, what a ridiculous concept. Secondly, if my son is gay, OK. I will love him no less. Thirdly, I am not worried that your son will grow up to be an actual ninja so back off!”

Mysterious Suicide of Gay Lottery Winner Remains Unsolved
I always say,
I would love to win a lottery,
pay some bills and spread some love around.
There’s a certain curse that sometimes goes with winning these big lotteries. There are dozens of stories, studies even, on lottery winners who have died broke, committed suicide, suffered divorces and battled family members, some of whom even tried to kill them off for the inheritance.
Lottery winners all too often find themselves with hangers-on after their new fortunes are announced. But for Richard Lang, who won £867,454 (approx $1.4 million) in a 2005 drawing and hanged himself in May, the man claiming to be his lover is a complete stranger to Lang’s family.
Joshua Jones says he found Lang already dead in his Leicestershire home as Jones was getting ready to leave for work. The pair met online and had a sexual relationship, but were not exactly committed, a British court’s inquest heard last week. And while Jones was living with Lang, Lang’s loved ones didn’t even know he existed
The pair had met on the internet, the inquest was told. Coroner Martin Gotheridge told the court at Leicester Town Hall it seemed Mr Lang had a ‘number of lives’. Mr Jones, now living in Wrexham, was not at the inquest today, but two statements were read to the court by the coroner. He said on May 17 Mr Lang, who carried on working as a British Waterways engineer despite his lottery win in 2005, came back from work as usual at 4.30pm.
‘He went into the dining room and sorted out some paperwork, I thought that was unusual as he could do that at any time and it wasn’t what he usually did in the evenings,’ his statement said. He said the couple ate dinner, watched a film then went to bed at about 11pm. The coroner said: ‘He then says that they slept together and Lang would often say that sex was pointless and everything was pointless as nothing made him excited or interested.’
The following morning Mr Lang got up at 7.40am as normal – the inquest heard he was usually picked up by a colleague at 8am. Mr Jones’s statement said: ‘I usually heard the TV come on as Lang usually watches the news as he eats his breakfast. ‘I heard something else on the TV, it was much louder than usual. ‘I was half asleep and I heard some noises on the stairs which I assumed was Lang getting ready for work.’ But he said when he heard the van arrive, he noticed Mr Lang did not leave the house as normal. ‘After approximately five minutes I thought it was strange that the van was still out on the driveway so I went downstairs.
‘As I looked down to the ground floor I thought I saw Lang kneeling on the floor. ‘I went down the stairs where I realised Lang was hanging.’
There was no suicide note, and no drugs or alcohol in Lang’s system. His family says he never showed signs of sadness or depression and had recently enjoyed some time at home with his mother.

When Dan Savage launched IT GETS BETTER a few weeks ago, I am sure he never dreamed President Obama would participate! High profile celebs from around the world have stepped up! (Except George Bush. Oh yeah, and Chelsea Handler!)
But it’s kind of funny – is it all just lip service? As Towleroad points out, “President Obama, as long as the actions of your administration continue to tell LGBT people that they are less than equal citizens, that they do not deserve to marry the person that they love, that they do not deserve to serve openly in the U.S. military, that they can still be fired from jobs because of who they are, how can you promise these kids that “it gets better?”

Like all of you, I was shocked and saddened by the deaths of several young people who were bullied and taunted for being gay, and who ultimately took their own lives. As a parent of two daughters, it breaks my heart. It’s something that just shouldn’t happen in this country.
We’ve got to dispel the myth that bullying is just a normal rite of passage—that it’s some inevitable part of growing up. It’s not. We have an obligation to ensure that our schools are safe forall of our kids. And to every young person out there you need to know that if you’re in trouble, there are caring adults who can help.
I don’t know what it’s like to be picked on for being gay. But I do know what it’s like to grow up feeling that sometimes you don’t belong. It’s tough. And for a lot of kids, the sense of being alone or apart—I know can just wear on you. And when you’re teased or bullied, it can seem like somehow you brought it on yourself—for being different, or for not fitting in with everybody else.
But what I want to say is this. You are not alone. You didn’t do anything wrong. You didn’t do anything to deserve being bullied. And there is a whole world waiting for you, filled with possibilities. There are people out there who love you and care about you just the way you are. And so, if you ever feel like because of bullying, because of what people are saying, that you’re getting down on yourself, you’ve got to make sure to reach out to people you trust. Whether it’s your parents, teachers, folks that you know care about you just the way you are. You’ve got to reach out to them, don’t feel like you’re in this by yourself.
The other thing you need to know is, things will get better. And more than that, with time you’re going to see that your differences are a source of pride and a source of strength. You’ll look back on the struggles you’ve faced with compassion and wisdom. And that’s not just going to serve you, but it will help you get involved and make this country a better place.
It will mean that you’ll be more likely to help fight discrimination—not just against LGBT Americans, but discrimination in all its forms. It means you’ll be more likely to understand personally and deeply why it’s so important that as adults we set an example in our own lives and that we treat everybody with respect. That we are able to see the world through other people’s eyes and stand in their shoes—that we never lose sight of what binds us together.
As a nation we’re founded on the belief that all of us are equal and each of us deserves the freedom to pursue our own version of happiness; to make the most of our talents; to speak our minds; to not fit in; most of all, to be true to ourselves. That’s the freedom that enriches all of us. That’s what America is all about.
And every day, it gets better.

Angry Flight Attendant Steven Slater Pleads Insanity
Jet Blue’s renegade
flight attendant Steven Slater
got off without jail time by pleading insanity,
according to NY Post.
Slater was facing a vicious prosecutor from the DA who claimed the flight attendant jeopardized lives and caused vast costs for the airport when he confronted a passenger, grabbed a beer and slid down the emergency chute of a parked plane.
Slater plead guilty to two counts of criminal mischief and agreed to attend a year of jail time and substance-abuse treatment, citing unspecified mental health problems. He will also pay JetBlue $10,000 to replace the chute.
For angry service workers everywhere, for whom Slater was a hero, this proves that customers can drive you crazy!
Slater’s attorney said the 38-year-old has flying “in his blood,” but JetBlue is trying to determine what set that blood to boiling that day.
“There’s much more to this story that we don’t know,” wrote JetBlue COO Rob Maruster in an internal memo obtained by the Wall Street Journal.

LGBT Suicide – It Gets Better Project with Dan Savage
Chicago-born Savage Love columnist and author Dan Savage and his husband Terry Miller have a message for all the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender youth out there: Whatever you’re experiencing now, be it family rejection, bullying and harassment in schools or even thoughts of suicide, it gets better.
Yesterday, Savage and Miller launched a campaign called the It Gets Better Project with an eight-minute YouTube video (embedded below) discussing their experiences as gay youth, segueing into a glimpse into their lives today including how they first met – introduced by a mutual drag queen buddy at a bar – and their decision to adopt a son, DJ, and start a family together.
In Minnesota and Indiana, a pair of 15-year-old boys have in recent months taken their own lives as the result of anti-gay bullying and harassment. Upon reading that news, Savage has borrowed a page from pioneering LGBT activist Harvey Milk, who famously said, “You gotta give ’em hope.” He hopes others will also create videos for the project, sharing messages of optimism about their own adult lives as open, proud queer people.
“Today we have the power to give these kids hope. We have the tools to reach out to them and tell our stories and let them know that it does get better,” Savage wrote of the project. “[M]any LGBT youth can’t picture what their lives might be like as openly gay adults. They can’t imagine a future for themselves. So let’s show them what our lives are like, let’s show them what the future may hold in store for them.”
The Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN)’s latest National School Climate Survey, released earlier this month, reports nearly nine out of 10 LGBT students experience harassment and nearly two-thirds of them felt unsafe in school. Only 11 states – Illinois included – currently specify LGBT students as a protected class in anti-bullying and harassment legislation.

Of course, gays do most everything better! Is it a big surprise this week a study shows that being raised by two mothers does not hinder healthy psychological development? A study was conducted as the first generation of children conceived by lesbians by insemination turn 18.
In fact, lesbian mothers rated their 17-year-olds higher in social and academic skills, and lower in rule-breaking and aggression, than mothers of teenagers who also had a father.
The U.S. study appears in the journal Pediatrics.
“There are so many places in the United States where same-sex couples are not allowed to adopt or foster children in need,” said Nanette Gartrell of the University of California, San Francisco, who started the study in 1986.
“But there is not a single study that has shown there are any problems in terms of psychological adjustment of the child.”
Gay Pride Around The World….Clubbing Can Be A Real Drag
Yesterday I did a post about body image and the beach – and it was sort of tongue in cheek about “being ready for the beach” so I am not judged by all the hot guys there who have perfect gym bodies. It’s sad, but true. In MANY cities around the world, the gay community can be very judgemental. Why is that?
GAY PRIDE month is upon us and I ask myself, “why are some gays so judgemental?” The blacks and the jews have experienced prejudice and ostracism…what have we learned? why is it that many gays in our community pass judgement on each other?
We just got back from Dallas . A city I thought would not be that exciting – when in fact, it was very fun and exciting! And the people there, at every bar, were so kind and personable, even when we did not fit in. Here we are dressed head to toe in designer couture walking into the Eagle of all places, and were welcomed with open arms. We walked into a “lesbian bar”, which was really only 70% women and the rest were men hanging out. We walk into a “latin club” and we were the only “white guys” in the whole place, yet guys smiled and talked to us.
Yet, In New York City, a city you would think is the most open-minded, you can walk into a bar in Chelsea and smile at someone, and they will turn their head rather than smile back at you, if you don’t fit that Chelsea boy image. Why do so many gays, especially in the 20-35 year old range, not give the time of day to older gays? Honey, you’re going to be old yourself one day! Don’t judge me for how I look – or don’t look. Embrace. Appreciate. Don’t hate!
Lady Bunny told me that recently, another popular drag queen in NYC was denied access to a gay bar. She was informed by the doorman that “this was men’s night and her kind was unwelcome.” WTF? Are you kidding me? It was the drag queens who threw the first stones at the Stonewall Riots and fought for our gay rights to even be here standing in a gay bar! Now we want to keep them out of our clubs?
Bunny says leather bars nationwide have a reputation of banning girls. I understand keeping out straight girls, who are un-escorted. But drag queens? “I understand that certain cruising scenes thrive on a no-frills, butch atmosphere. But if you’re really confident that you are a big he-man, overflowing with testosterone, why should it matter if a feather boa swishes by you?” Bunny asks.
“For many gay men, the cruising experience involves hiding any effeminate tendencies they might have. Otherwise you are less likely to snatch any trade that night….self-hatred, anyone?”
“This issue goes far beyond drag queens, ” Bunny continues. “One bear said to me – at least you drag queens get in everywhere and are even handed free drink tickets! Bears often can’t even get into clubs! – Leather bars discriminate against drag queens and twinks. All kinds of gay bars discriminate against women. Trendy clubs have dress codes which might prevent a slob’s entrance.”
“I travel to perform in smaller cities quite often, and it’s always refreshing to visit places where there is only one bar in town. Everyone from twink to bull-dyke to fag-hag is forced to mingle. But in NYC (and many other big cities) there are enough gays to segregate into different bars for different scenes. Gays are already a minority. Can we ever advance mutual goals of a gay agenda if we can’t even party together in our public spaces?”
A gay bar can have a “scene”, that’s fine. But do we have to ban or snicker or ignore at those who enter, who may not fit in?
So here is my challenge to YOU; next time you are in a club and see someone walk in alone, who looks nervous or like they may not “fit in” – you be the first to SMILE. And say HELLO! Reach out to that “different” person and welcome them. You may not want to date them, that’s fine! Just treat them with the same respect, that you would like others to treat you with.

LAUREN COX at ABC NEWS says Experts at the Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia worry that doctors may needlessly exclude gay men and lesbians from clinical trials that investigate a range of topics from cancer to diabetes and depression.
A study of 243 clinical trials related to couples and sexual function after various medical treatments showed that 37 trials explicitly excluded people in same-sex relationships, according to a letter published in the New England Journal of Medicine Wednesday.
“The National Institutes of Health guidelines really require scientists to have sound scientific reasoning for why they need to restrict the study to one ethnic group or sex,” said Brian L. Egleston, lead author on the paper and an assistant research professor at Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia. “But there’s not this same level of oversight when it comes to gay and lesbian patients.”

Assisted Suicide…Is It Murder? Ray Gosling Charged with Mercy Killing
I am from the Detroit area, so I am very familiar with Dr. Jack Kevorkian and issues of assisted suicide and the right to die.
The topic hasn’t been in the news much as of lately. Until this month. RAY GOSLING is an English journalist, author, broadcaster and gay rights activist. This month on a local BBC television programme, he admitted to have euthanised a dying lover. He was subsequently arrested. He is out on bond today.
THE GUARDIAN reports that Gosling, now 70, had claimed to have kept the killing secret, but close friends have revealed that he told a small number of confidants about what happened a few years later. They did not tell police because they considered the actions he described to be assisted suicide.
They said he told them the killing took place about 20 years ago and that, although Gosling has so far described the unnamed victim as “a bit on the side”, he knew him before he contracted Aids and during his illness. One friend also revealed that Gosling’s pact with the man was two-way so that “if either of them were in a bad situation the other would do it”.
Police are facing a difficult investigation because Gosling has said he will not volunteer details of the victim or when and where the killing took place, “even under torture”.
Gosling was released on police bail today after being questioned for a day and a half on suspicion of murder, his lawyer said.
Detectives are continuing to investigate the case by searching properties, interviewing Gosling’s friends and sifting through documentary evidence. Gosling gave the police substantial amounts of information that could lead to several months of further investigation.
The absence of a charge indicates he has stood firm by his resolution to withhold from the police the name of the victim, where he killed him and when.

I see nothing wrong with assisted suicide. Everyone should have the right, to make their own decision, what they can do with their own bodies. Be it in birth – or death. Whether you agree or disagree with someone’s choices, we should have the right to choose.

LGBT Gay Seniors Group SAGE Awarded HUGE GRANT From Government!
Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius and the Administration on Aging have awarded Services & Advocacy for Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual & Transgender Elders (SAGE) a three-year, $900,000 grant to create the nation’s only national resource center on LGBT aging.
The National Technical Assistance Resource Center for LGBT Elders will assist communities across the country in their efforts to provide services and supports for older LGBT people. The Resource Center will provide training to aging service providers and LGBT agencies nationwide, and will offer critically important educational tools to LGBT older people.
“The creation of a National Technical Assistance Resource Center for LGBT Elders is a monumental step forward for the LGBT community,” said Michael Adams, Executive Director of SAGE. “SAGE is extremely gratified to be given this opportunity to create and oversee the Resource Center in close cooperation with the Administration on Aging,” continued Adams.
“We are confident that working with AoA and our partners – who represent an extraordinary collaboration between the aging services network and the LGBT community – we will make a difference in the lives of every LGBT older person in every community in this country.”

Rue McClanhan’s Brush with Death. Actress Suffers Stroke.
AND THEN THERE WERE??….
Well, there is still two. At least for now.
Golden Girl Rue McClanahan has suffered what her rep terms a “minor” stroke while recovering from heart bypass surgery.
The erstwhile Blanche Devereaux had her heart operation in November. The Emmy winner then spent two weeks in the ICU after doctors successfully removed the blood clot in her brain. Her recovery is slow but steady, with her speech and movement on the right side of her body affected.
McClanahan, 75, is undergoing physical therapy but should be out of the hospital by the end of the month, according to her rep.
With the death of Bea Arthur last year, McClanahan and Betty White are the last surviving stars of the hugely popular former NBC sitcom.
ALLEGEDLY, Betty sent Rue a card. It read something to the effect of Dear Rue, I hope you will hurry up and die so that I can be the last Golden Girl left.
